Program Levels

Instructional Level (ages 7 & 8)

This is where the basics are taught, focusing on a complete introduction to the game. New players practice the fundamentals; dribbling, passing, shooting & rebounding. The focus is on the fundamentals of the game, but some competitive play may be introduced late in the season. Game play may be introduced later in the season (at the discretion of the coaches). There are two practice and game time slots during the week – from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM and 7:45 PM to 9:00 PM. All help is volunteered.

Junior Level (ages 9 & 10)

We continue to reinforce the basics, along with the importance of learning the rules. In addition, competitive game play increases (games being refereed by a volunteer referee). All players are evaluated based on their skill level; a draft is used to form teams. Playoffs can take place at this level, but team-play and sportsmanship are key.

Intermediate Level (ages 11 & 12)

We continue to reinforce the basics, along with the importance of learning the rules. In addition, competitive game play increases. The game is refereed by one paid PIAA official. More advanced offense and defense formations are introduced, but focus remains on team play and sportsmanship.

Minors Level (ages 13 & 14)

More emphasis is placed on skills and game knowledge during practice. The competition starts to really increase, reinforced by sportsmanship at all levels: players, coaches, parents, and fans. PIAA sanctioned referees are contracted to officiate the games.

Major Level (ages 15 to high school senior)

Emphasis continues on practice skills and knowledge of the game -- just at a higher level. Once again, sportsmanship is expected from all players, coaches, parents and fans. PIAA sanctioned referees are contracted to officiate the games.

Travel Basketball

The TYA travel basketball program is designed for advanced players who desire a more competitive practice and game and environment. Travel team age groups begin at age 8 and run through age 13. The determining date for the age of travel basketball players is August 1 of each year.

Eligibility is based on the age determining date. An athlete who does not meet the age determining date may qualify under the grade exception rule. Each team is allowed a maximum of three grade exception athletes.

Tryouts are traditionally held in October. Players are selected based on their individual skills and abilities. Keep in mind that playing time is not guaranteed.

Practices begin shortly after teams are selected. The regular season runs from December through February; playoffs are usually held in March. The travel team also participates in tournaments and scrimmages. There will be additional fees for Travel Players.
