It all started back in May, 1970. It was during that year that a local, fledgling youth organization -- with just a handful of sports teams -- was officially chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Fast forward to today. Just fifty years later, the Towamencin Youth Association (TYA) has grown to support over 2,000 young boys and girls, ages 4 to 18, to play in sports activities year-round. Those numbers represent over 300 intramural and travel teams competing in the sports of baseball, softball, soccer and basketball. And we're still growing!
And as we celebrate this year, it is important to note that TYA is a total volunteer organization -- staffed by volunteers and run by volunteers. It is because of their time and talent and efforts that TYA is proud to celebrate 50 years of service to our youth, our families and our community. So a special THANK YOU to our many coaches, umpires, referees, team parents, uniform and equipment managers, field maintenance and picture-day coordinators, event planners, snack bar coordinators and attendants, sponsors, committee and board members. These special people are the reason we are able to help our children experience the joy of athletic competition, while learning the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, goal-setting, preparation and hard-work. Not to mention, learning the valuable life lessons that range from the joy of victory to the challenges of defeat -- experiences we all inevitably face and overcome.
Watch for some of the upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations for all our sports. And here's to another 50 years!
